{"id":4852,"date":"2008-10-29T19:10:38","date_gmt":"2008-10-30T02:10:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=4852"},"modified":"2008-10-29T19:10:38","modified_gmt":"2008-10-30T02:10:38","slug":"the-barefoot-strip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2008\/10\/29\/the-barefoot-strip\/","title":{"rendered":"The Barefoot Strip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Free Gaza Movement&#8217;s chartered boat &#8220;Dignity&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2008\/10\/29\/chartered-boat-arrives-in-gaza-despite-israeli-threats\/\">arrived earlier today in the Gaza Strip<\/a>, loaded down with humanitarian aid supplies for the blockaded populace, but there&#8217;s one thing they probably didn&#8217;t think to pack, and is going to be increasingly hard to come by for your average Gazan.<\/p>\n<p>Shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, shoes. <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2008-10\/29\/content_10274965.htm\">Israel has reportedly banned shoes<\/a> and other clothing from being imported into the Gaza Strip, claiming that &#8220;they could be used in producing military uniforms.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Now, humanity has been making shoes for itself for at least 10,000 years, and there&#8217;s no denying that some of those shoes have been put the military use in that time. Still, its something one can at the very least consider a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dual-use_technologies\">dual use technology<\/a>.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Of course, with some Gazans <a href=\"http:\/\/features.csmonitor.com\/environment\/2008\/07\/10\/in-gaza-electric-cars-offer-a-way-around-israel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s-blockade\/\">finding electric car technology<\/a> as a solution to harshly curbed fuel imports, the production of shoes seems well within their technological capabilities.
