Informative and willing to tackle controversial issues, the show proved remarkably popular, a tribute to its host, Phil Donahue, who recently died at the age of 88. The show was briefly revived in 2002 on MSNBC, where it was the network\u2019s highest-rated offering until it was cancelled.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2024\/08\/19\/nation\/phil-donahue-dies\/\" rel=\"\">Boston Globe<\/a><\/em> had to say yesterday about Phil Donahue\u2019s show in 2002 and why MSNBC cancelled it:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Donahue returned briefly to television in 2002, hosting another \u201cDonahue\u201d show on MSNBC. The station canceled it after six months, citing low ratings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>OK, the suits at MSNBC may have cited \u201clow ratings,\u201d but the real reason was that Phil Donahue was asking uncomfortable questions in the run up to the Iraq War. His show was perceived as anti-war and therefore unprofitable and \u201cunpatriotic\u201d to those suits. It was frustrating for us to have to deal with the men Phil called \u201cthe suits\u201d \u2013 <strong>NBC<\/strong>and <strong>MSNBC<\/strong> executives who were intimidated by the Bush administration, and resisted any efforts by <strong>NBC<\/strong>\/<strong>MSNBC<\/strong> to practice journalism and ask tough questions of Washington before our young people were sent to Iraq to kill or be killed. Ultimately, Phil was fired because \u2013 as the<a href=\"https:\/\/fair.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e6457f9552de19bc603e65b9c&amp;id=f5ec63900a&amp;e=ca30fde442\" rel=\"\">leaked internal memo<\/a> said \u2013 Donahue represented \u201ca difficult public face for <strong>NBC<\/strong> at a time of war.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But before we were terminated, we put guests on the screen who were not commonly on mainstream TV. We offered a full hour with <a href=\"https:\/\/fair.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e6457f9552de19bc603e65b9c&amp;id=306aaa3d2e&amp;e=ca30fde442\" rel=\"\">Barbara Ehrenreich<\/a> on Labor Day 2002, a full hour with Studs Terkel, congressmembers Bernie Sanders and Dennis Kucinich, columnist <a href=\"https:\/\/fair.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e6457f9552de19bc603e65b9c&amp;id=5429fe98f7&amp;e=ca30fde442\" rel=\"\">Molly Ivins<\/a>, experts like <a href=\"https:\/\/fair.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e6457f9552de19bc603e65b9c&amp;id=62c4fbc32f&amp;e=ca30fde442\" rel=\"\">Phyllis Bennis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fair.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e6457f9552de19bc603e65b9c&amp;id=c82afc1af8&amp;e=ca30fde442\" rel=\"\">Laura Flanders<\/a>, Palestinian advocates including <a href=\"https:\/\/fair.us20.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e6457f9552de19bc603e65b9c&amp;id=b39e7acd85&amp;e=ca30fde442\" rel=\"\">Hanan Ashrawi<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>No one on US TV cross-examined Israeli leaders like Phil did when he interviewed then-Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, and later, former Prime Minister Ehud Barak. If we had two guests on the left, we needed three on the right. When a producer suggested booking Michael Moore \u2013 known to oppose the pending Iraq War \u2013 she was told she\u2019d need to book three right-wingers for political balance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Three weeks before the Iraq war started, and after some of the biggest antiwar mobilizations the world had ever seen (which were barely covered on mainstream TV), the suits at <strong>NBC<\/strong>\/<strong>MSNBC<\/strong> terminated our show.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Keep this in mind if you watch MSNBC today, currently airing glowing coverage of the Democrats and the war machine.
