{"id":52091,"date":"2025-03-15T12:56:27","date_gmt":"2025-03-15T20:56:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=52091"},"modified":"2025-03-15T13:00:01","modified_gmt":"2025-03-15T21:00:01","slug":"extremist-zionist-group-sent-list-of-palestine-defenders-to-trump-officials-for-deportation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2025\/03\/15\/extremist-zionist-group-sent-list-of-palestine-defenders-to-trump-officials-for-deportation\/","title":{"rendered":"Extremist Zionist Group Sent List of Palestine Defenders to Trump Officials for Deportation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Betar, the international far-right pro-Israel group that took credit for the Department of Homeland Security&#8217;s <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/mahmoud-khalil-columbia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrest<\/a> of former Columbia University graduate student and permanent U.S. resident Mahmoud Khalil for protesting the annihilation of <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/gaza\">Gaza<\/a>, claimed this week that it has sent &#8220;thousands of names&#8221; of <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/palestine\">Palestine<\/a> defenders to Trump administration officials for possible deportation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jihadis have no place in civilized nations,&#8221; Betar <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Betar_USA\/status\/1900596939206385822\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on social media Friday following the publication of a <em>Guardian<\/em> <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/mar\/14\/israel-betar-deportation-list-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> on the extremist group&#8217;s activities.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Betar <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Betar_USA\/status\/1899075454310440964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: &#8220;We told you we have been working on deportations and will continue to do so. Expect naturalized citizens to start being picked up within the month. You heard it here first. Those who support jihad and intifada and originate in terrorist states will be sent back to those lands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Betar has been gloating about last week&#8217;s arrest of Khalil, the lead negotiator for the group Columbia University Apartheid Divest during the April 2024 Gaza Solidarity Encampment.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, immigration officers <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/columbia-protestor-arrested-overstaying-student-visa-campus-khalil-rcna196450\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested<\/a> another Columbia Gaza protester, Leqaa Kordia \u2013 a Palestinian from the illegally occupied West Bank \u2013 for allegedly overstaying her expired student visa. Kordia was also arrested last April during one of the Columbia campus protests against the Gaza onslaught.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/03\/14\/video-columbia-university-student-whose-visa-was-revoked-supporting-hamas-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian doctoral student at Columbia whose visa was revoked on March 5 for alleged involvement &#8220;in activities supporting&#8221; Hamas \u2013 the Palestinian resistance group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government \u2013 used the Customs and Border Protection&#8217;s self-deportation app and, <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/14\/us-news\/second-anti-israel-columbia-protester-leqaa-kordia-arrested-by-homeland-security-for-immigration-violations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> media reports, has left the country.<\/p>\n<p>Khalil and Kordia&#8217;s arrests come as the Trump administration <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/dept-of-education-attacks-trump-administration-colleges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targets<\/a> Columbia and other schools over pro-Palestinian protests under the guise of combating antisemitism, despite the Ivy League university&#8217;s <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/columbia-president-resigns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violent crackdown<\/a> on demonstrations and <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/columbia-protests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revocation<\/a> of degrees from some pro-Palestine activists.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>, who in January <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-executive-order-protests\" target=\"_self\">signed<\/a> an executive order authorizing the deportation of noncitizen students and others who took part in protests against Israel&#8217;s war on Gaza, <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/mahmoud-khalil-wife-statement\" target=\"_self\">called<\/a> Khalil&#8217;s detention &#8220;the first arrest of many to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/14\/politics\/justice-department-terrorism-columbia-university-protests\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> Friday that it is investigating whether pro-Palestinian demonstrators at the school violated federal anti-terrorism laws. This followed Thursday&#8217;s <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/14\/us\/politics\/dorm-search-columbia-university-dhs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">search<\/a> of two Columbia dorm rooms by DHS agents and the <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-campus-protests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancellation<\/a> earlier this month of $400 million worth of funding and contracts for Columbia because the Trump administration says university officials haven&#8217;t done enough to tackle alleged antisemitism on campus.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Betar <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Betar_USA\/status\/1900611049637724488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">named<\/a> Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian studying philosophy at Columbia, as its next target.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Imagine if any Palestinian org tweeted something like this, they\u2019d arrest us for incitement. Like seriously imagine I said burn Columbia down, it would make the news and I\u2019d have FBI at my doors. But Betar continues to be a nonprofit right here in NYC. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RW7IbJifKp\">https:\/\/t.co\/RW7IbJifKp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nerdeen Kiswani (@NerdeenKiswani) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NerdeenKiswani\/status\/1900570984060428614?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 14, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Critics have voiced alarm about Betar&#8217;s activities, pointing to the pro-Israel Anti-Defamation League&#8217;s <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/extremismterms.adl.org\/glossary\/betar-usa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent designation<\/a> of the organization as a hate group. Founded in 1923 by the early Zionist leader Ze&#8217;ev Jabotinsky, Betar has a long history of extremism. Its members \u2013 who included former Israeli Prime Ministers Yitzhak Shamir and Menachem Begin \u2013 took part in the <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2018\/05\/11\/the-dark-side-of-israeli-independence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zionist terror campaign<\/a> against Palestinian Arabs and British forces occupying Palestine in the 1940s.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Betar supports Kahanism \u2013 a Jewish supremacist and apartheid movement named after Meir Kahane, an Orthodox rabbi convicted of terrorism before being <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1990\/11\/06\/obituaries\/meir-kahane-58-israeli-militant-and-founder-of-the-jewish-defense-league.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">assassinated<\/a> in 1990 \u2013 and is linked to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu&#8217;s Likud Party. The group has <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Betar_USA\/status\/1900563157673710012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called for<\/a> the ethnic cleansing and Israeli recolonization of Gaza. During Israel&#8217;s assault on the coastal enclave, which is the subject of an International Court of Justice <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/south-africa-icj-genocide-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">genocide case<\/a>, its account on the social media site X responded to the publication of a list of thousands of Palestinian children killed by Israeli forces by <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/propvstruth\/status\/1899551717483806741\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a>: &#8220;Not enough. We demand blood in Gaza!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ross Glick, who led the U.S. chapter of Betar until last month, told <em>The Guardian<\/em> that he has met with bipartisan members of Congress who support the group&#8217;s efforts, naming lawmakers including Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/john-fetterman\">John Fetterman<\/a> (D-Pa.). Glick also claimed to have the support of &#8220;collaborators&#8221; who use artificial intelligence and facial recognition to help identify pro-Palestine activists. Earlier this month, the U.S. State Department <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-ai-student-visas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it was launching an AI-powered &#8220;catch and revoke&#8221; program to cancel the visas of international students deemed supportive of Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>Betar isn&#8217;t alone in aggressively targeting Palestine defenders. The group Canary Mission \u2013 which <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/canarymission\/status\/1899180339186294804\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it is &#8220;delighted&#8221; about Khalil&#8217;s &#8220;deserved consequences&#8221; \u2013 publishes an online database containing personal information about people it deems antisemitic, and this week <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/canarymission\/status\/1899181644948582655\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> a video naming five other international students it says are &#8220;linked to campus extremism at Columbia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shai Davidai, an assistant professor at Columbia who was <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/16\/us\/columbia-university-suspends-professor-shai-davidai\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temporarily banned<\/a> from campus last year after harassing university employees, and Columbia student David Lederer, have waged what Khalil <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/mahmoud-khalil-detained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> &#8220;a vicious, coordinated, and dehumanizing doxxing campaign&#8221; against him and other activists.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">ARC and TransCultural Exchange (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TransCulturalEx?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TransCulturalEx<\/a>) strongly condemn far-right, Jewish nationalist group Betar US\u2019 targeting of award-winning Palestinian poet Mosab Abu Toha on social media, including its demand for his deportation.
