{"id":5340,"date":"2009-02-23T20:23:25","date_gmt":"2009-02-24T04:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=5340"},"modified":"2009-02-23T20:23:25","modified_gmt":"2009-02-24T04:23:25","slug":"abrams-confirms-his-new-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2009\/02\/23\/abrams-confirms-his-new-role\/","title":{"rendered":"Abrams Confirms His New Role"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/969.html\">Elliott Abrams<\/a> just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/Content\/Public\/Articles\/000\/000\/016\/177aimud.asp\">confirmed<\/a> that he will be official mouthpiece of Bibi Netanyahu and his Likud Party at the Council on Foreign Relations and on the pages of <em>The Weekly Standard<\/em> (and probably in the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, too).<\/p>\n<p>In reading the article, ironically entitled \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/Content\/Public\/Articles\/000\/000\/016\/177aimud.asp\">The Path of Realism or the Path to Failure: Laying a Foundation for Peace in Palestine<\/a>,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d what can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t help but be struck by the coincidence in views between Abrams and the Likud leader on virtually every single issue regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, from reviving the notion of a Jordanian option to seeing the conflict as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153part of a broader struggle in the region over Iranian extremism and power.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Also noteworthy is the clarity with which he expresses his total opposition to his former boss\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s (President George W. Bush) stated policy, particularly with respect to the Annapolis process (although it apparently didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t occur to him to offer his resignation under the circumstances) and his explicit embrace of Palestinian Authority (PA) Prime Minister Salam Fayyad (\u00e2\u20ac\u009dreliable and trustworthy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d) and the PA\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s U.S.-tutored security forces who \u00e2\u20ac\u0153acted in parallel, and sometimes in concert, with Israeli forces\u00e2\u20ac\u009d during Israel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s military campaign in Gaza. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sure both Fayyad and the PA\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s security forces appreciate such a fulsome endorsement from Netanyahu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s alter ego.<\/p>\n<p>With friends like Abrams, who seems to think that democratic reform \u00e2\u20ac\u201d remember, he was in charge of global democracy promotion, as well as the Middle East, in Bush\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s National Security Council \u00e2\u20ac\u201d consists mainly of building Palestinian security forces that can maintain Israel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s occupation indefinitely and fails to mention the word \u00e2\u20ac\u0153settlements\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in a 3,200-page essay on \u00e2\u20ac\u0153realism\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and laying a foundation for peace in Palestine, who needs enemies?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elliott Abrams just confirmed that he will be official mouthpiece of Bibi Netanyahu and his Likud Party at the Council on Foreign Relations and on the pages of The Weekly Standard (and probably in the Wall Street Journal, too).
