Dorothy Shea \u2013 a former political officer at the American Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel \u2013 was the lone vote against the Security Council draft resolution demanding an &#8220;immediate, unconditional, and permanent cease-fire&#8221; in Gaza and the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas and other Palestinian resistance groups.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any product that undermines our close ally Israel&#8217;s security is a nonstarter,&#8221; Shea explained after sinking the resolution. In addition to diplomatic cover, the U.S. provides Israel with <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/20-billion-weapons-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tens of billions of dollars<\/a> in armed aid, including weapons that have been <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/israel-bomb-refugee-camp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used<\/a> in some of the Israel Defense Forces&#8217; (IDF) deadliest massacres in Gaza.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BREAKING?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BREAKING<\/a><br \/>UN Security Council FAILS TO ADOPT draft resolution that would have demanded an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, and the release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups<\/p>\n<p>Voting results<br \/>In favor: 14<br \/>Against: 1 (US) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/le6tNror30\">pic.twitter.com\/le6tNror30<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; UN News (@UN_News_Centre) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UN_News_Centre\/status\/1930358040437420409?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 4, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The resolution was put forth by the 10 non-permanent Security Council members \u2013 Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Somalia, and South Korea \u2013 who <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/buildingtrust.si\/statement\/joint-e10-statement-on-a-draft-resolution-on-the-humanitarian-situation-in-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> Wednesday in a joint statement that the measure was &#8220;prompted by our deep concern over the catastrophic situation in Gaza, which deteriorated further after the resumption of hostilities in March.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.palestinechronicle.com\/washington-stands-alone-as-it-vetoes-gaza-ceasefire-resolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to<\/a> <em>The <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/palestine\">Palestine<\/a> Chronicle<\/em>, Hamas \u2013 which governs Gaza and led the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel \u2013 said the U.S. veto shows &#8220;Washington&#8217;s blind bias towards the occupation government&#8221; and support for Israel&#8217;s &#8220;crimes against humanity in Gaza.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At least hundreds of Gazans, mostly children, have <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/gaza-starvation-deaths-soar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently died<\/a> from malnutrition and lack of medical care amid Israel&#8217;s tightened siege, according to local officials. Israeli airstrikes continue to <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/ward-al-sheikh-khalil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kill<\/a> and wound scores of Palestinians \u2013 and <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/almost-100-killed-gaza-24-hours-israel-stops-aid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sometimes more \u2013 <\/a>daily, and upward of 100 Gazans have been <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/israel-food-aid-massacre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shot dead<\/a> while desperately trying to secure humanitarian aid in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This latest shameful U.S. veto \u2013 one in a long list \u2013 gives Israel the green light to continue its genocide of Palestinians in Gaza,&#8221; <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/amnesty-international\">Amnesty International<\/a> secretary general Agn\u00e8s Callamard said in a <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/press-releases\/usa-veto-of-un-resolution-on-lifting-gaza-aid-restrictions-and-release-of-hostages-is-shameful-and-inhumane-amid-israels-ongoing-genocide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;It allows Israel to continue starving Palestinian civilians and creating conditions of life meant to bring about their destruction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to vetoing five Security Council cease-fire resolutions, the U.S. last year used its veto power to <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/united-nations-palestine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">block<\/a> Palestine&#8217;s bid to become a full U.N. member. The U.S. also <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/u-n-cease-fire-resolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abstained<\/a> from voting on two Security Council cease-fire resolutions <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/united-nation-resolution-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">during<\/a> the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The U.S. has squandered yet another crucial opportunity to demand that Israel ends civilian bloodshed,&#8221; Callamard added. &#8220;What possible justification can there be for blocking action by the U.N. Security Council that could help to end the harrowing starvation and suffering, free hostages, and lift Israel&#8217;s suffocating aid restrictions?&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hand of Genocide:<\/p>\n<p>US vetoes UNSC resolution for immediate ceasefire in Gaza, giving green light for continued genocide. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S3veRmFQUF\">pic.twitter.com\/S3veRmFQUF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; PalMedia (@PalMediaOrg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PalMediaOrg\/status\/1930371978331820132?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 4, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>All told, more than 194,000 Palestinians have been killed or wounded \u2013 including over 14,000 people who are missing and believed dead and buried beneath rubble \u2013 during 606 days of an onslaught for which Israel is facing a <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/south-africa-icj-genocide-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">genocide case<\/a> at the World Court and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/icc-arrest-warrant-netanyahu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wanted<\/a> by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity including extermination and <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/amnesty-israel-starvation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weaponized starvation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Upward of 2 million Palestinians have also been forcibly displaced, often multiple times, most recently during Operation Gideon&#8217;s Chariots, the IDF&#8217;s ongoing <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/condemnation-of-israel-grows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campaign<\/a> to indefinitely occupy and ethnically cleanse Gaza, possibly to facilitate <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/israel-gaza-resettlement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israeli recolonization<\/a>, as pushed by far-right figures.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, International Committee of the Red Cross president Mirjana Spoljaric <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/humanitarian-situation-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> conditions in Gaza are &#8220;worse&#8221; than last month, when she described them as &#8220;hell on Earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All this, as a cease-fire proves as elusive as ever due to what pro-Palestine critics say is Netanyahu&#8217;s desire to prolong the war in order to delay his own criminal corruption trial and Hamas&#8217; <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/5\/31\/hamas-says-ceasefire-proposal-offers-no-guarantees-end-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demand<\/a> for a guaranteed end to Israel&#8217;s onslaught.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The world is watching, day after day, horrifying scenes of Palestinians being shot, wounded, or killed in Gaza while simply trying to eat,&#8221; Tom Fletcher, the U.N.&#8217;s top humanitarian chief, <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2025\/06\/1164056\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Wednesday. &#8220;We must be allowed to do our jobs. We have the teams, the plan, the supplies, and the experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International USA executive director Paul O&#8217;Brien said: &#8220;Once again, the U.S. government, this time under Trump&#8217;s leadership, is on the wrong side of history. While it&#8217;s not a surprise the U.S. vetoed this resolution, it&#8217;s nonetheless devastating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The language is focused on the urgency of the unconditional release of all hostages and unfettered access to humanitarian aid,&#8221; O&#8217;Brien added. &#8220;When children are dying of starvation and the fate of the hostages is uncertain, it&#8217;s simply unconscionable to stand in the way of this resolution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><i>Brett Wilkins is is staff writer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/\">Common Dreams<\/a>.
