{"id":5441,"date":"2009-03-29T19:44:24","date_gmt":"2009-03-30T03:44:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=5441"},"modified":"2009-03-30T06:39:31","modified_gmt":"2009-03-30T14:39:31","slug":"national-call-in-day-on-cluster-bombs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/29\/national-call-in-day-on-cluster-bombs\/","title":{"rendered":"National Call-In Day on Cluster Bombs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fcnl.org\/index.htm\">Friends Committee on National Legislation<\/a> is organizing a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fcnl.org\/weapons\/mar30_call.htm\">national call-in day<\/a> encouraging people to call their senators (<strong>1-800-590-6313<\/strong>) and asking them to co-sponsor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opencongress.org\/bill\/111-s416\/show\">S. 416<\/a>, the <strong>Cluster Munitions Civilian Protection Act of 2009<\/strong>, a bill sponsored by Sen. Feinstein (CA) and already co-sponsored by 23 other senators. <\/p>\n<p>Though it&#8217;s unfortunately still somewhat short of a total ban, S. 416 would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opencongress.org\/bill\/111-s416\/text\">seriously curb American use<\/a> of cluster bombs, particularly where they would imperil civilians. The United States is one of only a handful of nations <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2008\/12\/03\/us-wont-participate-as-cluster-bomb-ban-signed\/\">which didn&#8217;t sign the Oslo ban<\/a> on cluster bombs late last year, and has heavily used them, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headlines02\/1218-02.htm\">quite infamously<\/a>, in recent wars. <\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Scott Horton will also be interviewing  the national coordinator of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.banminesusa.org\/\">US Campaign to Ban Landmines &#038; Cluster Bombs<\/a> Lora Lumpe on <a href=\"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/radio\/\">Antiwar Radio<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>FCNL <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fcnl.org\/weapons\/mar30_call.htm\">has a list<\/a> of which senators are already on board with the measure and which ones still need to be called.
