{"id":55413,"date":"2025-10-04T06:15:58","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T14:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=55413"},"modified":"2025-10-04T06:15:58","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T14:15:58","slug":"trump-fabricates-a-war-to-cover-up-murder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2025\/10\/04\/trump-fabricates-a-war-to-cover-up-murder\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Fabricates a War to Cover Up Murder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/02\/us\/politics\/trump-drug-cartels-war.html\" rel=\"\">made up<\/a> some more lies about his <a href=\"https:\/\/daniellarison.substack.com\/p\/congress-must-not-rubber-stamp-trumps?utm_source=publication-search\" rel=\"\">murder spree<\/a> in the Caribbean:<\/p>\n<p><em>President Trump has decided that the United States is engaged in a formal \u201carmed conflict\u201d with drug cartels his team has labeled terrorist organizations and that suspected smugglers for such groups are \u201cunlawful combatants,\u201d the administration said in a confidential notice to Congress this week.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is no such armed conflict. The president has dressed up his summary executions of alleged criminals by pretending that the U.S. is fighting a war with these groups, but these groups are not engaged in hostilities with our government. They aren\u2019t carrying our armed attacks on our country or our military. Calling them terrorist organizations doesn\u2019t authorize or legitimize the killing Trump has ordered. Branding noncombatants as combatants doesn\u2019t make them lawful targets.<\/p>\n<p>The administration has dubbed this a \u201cnon-international armed conflict\u201d for the purposes of creating a fig leaf for the president\u2019s murders. That is another lie. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undrr.org\/understanding-disaster-risk\/terminology\/hips\/so0102\" rel=\"\">non-international armed conflict<\/a> is one where a state or a non-state group is fighting with an armed non-state group. To qualify as a non-international armed conflict, the non-state party or parties to the conflict must be organized and the violence between them and the state must be intense.<\/p>\n<p>As we can see, there is no conflict of any kind happening. There is no one fighting back. Our military is simply blowing up boats full of civilians because the president feels like it.<\/p>\n<p>Trump wants to use the language of the \u201cwar on terror\u201d to excuse his serial murders of <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2025\/09\/26\/trump-venezuela-boat-strike-drugs\/?utm_content=buffer2e23a&amp;utm_medium=buffer&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=theintercept\" rel=\"\">Venezuelan fishermen<\/a>, but he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/02\/us\/politics\/trump-drug-cartels-war.html\" rel=\"\">doesn\u2019t have a leg to stand on<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Noting that it is illegal for the military to deliberately target civilians who are not directly participating in hostilities \u2014 even suspected criminals \u2014 Mr. Corn called the president\u2019s move an \u201cabuse\u201d that crossed a major legal line.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis is not stretching the envelope,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is shredding it.
