After two years of US-backed Israeli genocide in Gaza<\/a> that\u2019s left hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children dead, maimed, starved, sickened, and displaced and countless others traumatized for life, a key United Nations leader on Wednesday urged an immediate ceasefire and entry of humanitarian aid into the embattled strip.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the last two years, a staggering 64,000 children have reportedly been killed or maimed across the Gaza Strip, including at least 1,000 babies,\u201c United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Catherine Russell said<\/a> Wednesday. \u201dWe don\u2019t know how many more have died due to preventable illnesses or are buried under the rubble.\u201c<\/p>\n

Russell\u2019s remarks came days after UNICEF spokesperson James Elder also urged<\/a> an end to what he called a \u201dwar on children.\u201c<\/p>\n

The charity Save the Children and others say at least 20,000 children<\/a> are among the more than 67,000 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in Gaza over the past two years. That\u2019s one child every hour in what the UN agency for Palestinian refugees last year reported<\/a> was a higher child death toll than in the previous four years of all the world\u2019s armed conflicts combined.<\/p>\n

Israeli forces have killed at least 20,000 children in Gaza since October 2023. This is a deeply shameful statistic for our collective humanity \u2013 a horrific new low.Every single one of these 20,000 children had names, favourite subjects in school, and hopes and dreams for the future.<\/p>\n
