Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) put forth an <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gallego.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Gallego_Greenland-Amendment.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amendment<\/a> to the Senate Defense Appropriations bill \u201cto prohibit the use of funds for military force, the conduct of hostilities, or the preparation for war against or with respect to Greenland,\u201d a self-governing territory of Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamilies are getting crushed by rising grocery and housing costs, inflation is up, and [President Donald] Trump\u2019s name is all over the Epstein files,\u201d Gallego said in a <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gallego.senate.gov\/press-releases\/gallego-introduces-amendment-to-block-military-force-against-greenland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. \u201cInstead of doing anything to fix those problems, Trump is trying to distract people by threatening to start wars and invade countries \u2013 first in Venezuela, and now against our NATO ally Denmark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s happening in Venezuela shows us that we can\u2019t just ignore Trump\u2019s reckless threats,\u201d Gallego added. \u201cHis dangerous behavior puts American lives and our global credibility at risk. I\u2019m introducing this amendment to make it clear that Congress will not bankroll illegal, unnecessary military action, and to force Republicans to choose whether they\u2019re going to finally stand up or keep enabling Trump\u2019s chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">WAKE UP. He wouldn\u2019t think twice about putting our troops in danger if it makes him feel big and strong. The US military is not a toy,\u201d Gallego \u2013 a former Marine Corps infantryman \u2013 <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RubenGallego\/status\/2008657429882708436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on social media.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-maduro-venezuela\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illegal<\/a> US invasion and bombing of Venezuela and kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife \u2013 which came amid a <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-strikes-boat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-seas airstrike campaign<\/a> against alleged drug traffickers \u2013 spooked many Greenlanders, Danes, and Europeans, who say they have no choice but to take Trump\u2019s threats seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThreats, pressure, and talk of annexation have no place between friends,\u201d Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said Monday on social media. \u201cThat is not how you speak to a people who have shown responsibility, stability, and loyalty time and again. Enough is enough. No more pressure. No more innuendo. No more fantasies about annexation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-renews-threat-of-military-force-to-annex-greenland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> during a Monday television interview that \u201cif the United States decides to militarily attack another NATO country, then everything would stop \u2013 that includes NATO, and therefore the post-Second World War security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other European leaders have also rallied behind Greenland amid the mounting US threat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland,\u201d the leaders of Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Spain <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/only-greenland-denmark-can-decide-their-future-european-leaders-say-joint-2026-01-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asserted<\/a> in a statement also backed by the Netherlands and Canada \u2013 which Trump <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/only-greenland-denmark-can-decide-their-future-european-leaders-say-joint-2026-01-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has said<\/a> he wants to make the \u201c51st state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House said Tuesday that Trump and members of his national security team are weighing a \u201crange of options\u201d to acquire Greenland, and that military action is \u201calways an option\u201d for seizing the mineral-rich and strategic island.<\/p>\n<p>This, after White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller brushed off criticism of a <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KatieMiller\/status\/2007541679293944266\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media post<\/a> by his wife, who posted an image showing a map of Greenland covered in the American flag with the caption, \u201cSOON.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can talk all you want about international niceties and everything else,\u201d Miller told <em>CNN <\/em>on Monday. \u201cBut we live in a world, in the real world, that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No war powers resolution has ever succeeded in stopping a US president from proceeding with military action, including one <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/article\/defense\/gallego-war-powers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced<\/a> last month by Gallego in a bid to stop the boat strikes in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), who has also <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/house-war-powers-resolutions-fail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unsuccessfully tried<\/a> to get war powers resolutions passed, implied Tuesday that more measures aimed at preventing Trump from attacking Greenland may be forthcoming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has repeatedly raised Greenland, <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-rubio-cuba-mexico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cuba, Mexico, Colombia<\/a>. He\u2019s <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-bombs-nigeria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waged military action<\/a> within Nigeria,\u201d Kaine <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/01\/06\/congress\/greenland-war-powers-gallego-00712605\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> of Trump, who has bombed more countries than any president in history. \u201cSo I think members of the Senate should go on the record about all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Greenland, <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/greenland-opinion-poll-85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only a handful<\/a> of the island\u2019s 57,000 inhabitants want to join the United States. More than 8 in 10 favor independence amid often <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/news\/greenland-bemoans-strained-relations-with-copenhagen-dba58dd?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqcbY0j78BhZTODJEam7cQ3aXFZIJrUbeNinkS5cgN9l93Zt8siO-kCHve11cYM%3D&amp;gaa_ts=695d9075&amp;gaa_sig=z3ikKxnz5q1_A9rqJmVrCyoMoeUKAUfgVzigRehZauVoOTF1EMuXKwJ7TTKkGMIat4g5tHXQoxFTW-YA3RvkJA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strained relations<\/a> with their masters in Copenhagen and the legacy of a colonial history <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/02\/1133382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rife with abuses<\/a>. Greenlanders enjoy a Nordic-style social welfare system that features universal healthcare; free higher education; and income, family, and employment benefits and protections unimaginable in today\u2019s United States.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-independence figures say like-minded people must use the specter of a US takeover to wring concessions from Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am more nervous that we are potentially in a situation where only Denmark\u2019s wishes are taken into account and that we have not even been clarified about what we want,\u201d Aki-Matilda Tilia Ditte H\u00f8egh-Dam, a member of the pro-independence Naleraq party in Greenland\u2019s Inatsisartut, or Parliament, <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sermitsiaq.ag\/samfund\/aki-matilda-gronlands-interesser-skal-frem-nu-hvor-verden-lytter\/2326186\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> <em>Sermitsiaq<\/em> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in the Folketinget [Danish Parliament] right now, and I see that the Danish government is constantly making agreements with the United States,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s not that they ask Greenland first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>US Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) was among observers who noted Tuesday that any US invasion of Greenland would oblige other NATO members to defend the island under the North Atlantic Treaty\u2019s collective defense requirement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/en\/what-we-do\/introduction-to-nato\/collective-defence-and-article-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Article 5<\/a> says.
