{"id":58842,"date":"2026-04-20T16:41:38","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T00:41:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=58842"},"modified":"2026-04-20T16:41:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T00:41:38","slug":"gaza-needs-71-4-billion-for-recovery-as-genocide-sets-development-back-77-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2026\/04\/20\/gaza-needs-71-4-billion-for-recovery-as-genocide-sets-development-back-77-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Gaza Needs $71.4 Billion for Recovery as Genocide Sets Development Back 77 Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A joint assessment published Monday by the European Union, United Nations, and World Bank found that an estimated $71.4 billion is needed over the next decade for recovery and reconstruction in the Gaza Strip, where 30 months of Israeli genocide has set human development back by an entire lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/unsco.unmissions.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-04\/full_report-_gaza_strip_rapid_damage_and_needs_assessment_rdna_2026_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza Strip Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment <\/a> (RDNA) states that the $71.4 billion figure includes an estimated $26.3 billion required over the next 18 months \u201cto restore essential service, rebuild critical infrastructure, and support economic recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysical infrastructure damages are estimated at $35.2 billion, with economic and social losses amounting to $22.7 billion,\u201d the report continues. \u201cThe hardest-hit sectors include housing, health, education, commerce, and agriculture. Over 371,888 housing units have been destroyed or damaged, more than 50% of hospitals are nonfunctional, nearly all schools destroyed or damaged, and the economy has contracted by 84% in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCatastrophic impact on human development across Gaza&#8230; is estimated to have been set back by 77 years,\u201d the RDNA states. \u201cAround 1.9 million people have been displaced, often multiple times, and more than 60% of the population has lost their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen, children, persons with disabilities, and those with preexisting vulnerabilities bear the greatest burden,\u201d the publication adds.<\/p>\n<p>The new analysis follows a November 2025 UN Conference on Trade and Development report that <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/israel-gaza-economic-collapse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> Israel\u2019s assault on Gaza has caused \u201cthe most severe economic crisis ever recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli war has left more than 250,000 Palestinians dead, maimed, or missing; the strip in ruins; and most of its approximately 2 million people forcibly displaced, starved, or sickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver two years of conflict has resulted in more than 71,000 Palestinian fatalities and over 171,000 injured, and many are <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/gaza-body-recovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">missing<\/a> under the rubble,\u201d the report notes.<\/p>\n<p>With the vast majority of Gaza\u2019s buildings <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/unosat-gaza-strip-damage-assessment-31oct25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">damaged or destroyed<\/a>, separate UN analyses have <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/02\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-homes-rebuild-un-report.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> that it could take as many as 80 years to rebuild the obliterated coastal exclave.<\/p>\n<p>So far, roughly $17 billion in pledged funding has been announced through the so-called \u201cBoard of Peace\u201d launched by US President <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>, whose ideas for rebuilding Gaza have <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-ethnic-cleansing-gaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">included<\/a> kicking Palestinians out and turning the strip into what he called the \u201cRiviera of the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Only a \u201ctiny fraction\u201d of that already inadequate $17 billion has been received, Reuters <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/trumps-peace-board-faces-cash-crunch-stalling-gaza-plan-sources-say-2026-04-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> earlier this month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A joint assessment published Monday by the European Union, United Nations, and World Bank found that an estimated $71.4 billion is needed over the next decade for recovery and reconstruction in the Gaza Strip, where 30 months of Israeli genocide has set human development back by an entire lifetime.
