Bernie Sanders on Monday urged congressional lawmakers to strike a highly controversial provision from next year\u2019s military spending authorization bill that is aimed at deepening integration of the US and Israeli armed forces under the guise of reducing aid.<\/p>\n<p>A provision of the proposed $1.15 trillion <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/8800\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Defense Authorization Act<\/a> (NDAA) for fiscal year 2027 originally titled Section 224 but now renumbered Section 219 would establish a formal \u201cUnited States-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative\u201d requiring the US defense secretary to designate a Pentagon executive agent responsible for coordinating and expanding US-Israel defense technology collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu \u2013 who is <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/icc-arrest-warrant-netanyahu\" target=\"_self\">wanted<\/a> by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza \u2013 has <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeastmonitor.com\/20260604-my-plan-netanyahu-letter-reveals-israels-bid-to-replace-us-aid-with-military-fusion\/?amp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a> the section his personal plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly 16% of Americans support arming Israel without restrictions. So what is Congress doing? Burying a provision in the defense bill that would give Israel more military integration than any NATO ally,\u201d Sanders (I-Vt.) <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenSanders\/status\/2066585100293185928\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> on social media. \u201cWe must strip Section 224 from the Pentagon budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, members of the House Armed Services Committee from both parties <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/ndaa-section-224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rejected<\/a> an amendment introduced by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) to remove the integration provision from the 2027 NDAA. The committee then advanced the broader defense package. The Senate Armed Services Committee <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.armed-services.senate.gov\/press-releases\/sasc-completes-markup-of-national-defense-authorization-act-for-fiscal-year-2027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">subsequently voted<\/a> to advance the proposed NDAA.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) \u2013 an anti-interventionist libertarian who recently <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/thomas-massie-aipac\" target=\"_self\">lost<\/a> his reelection primary to a challenger backed by President Donald Trump \u2013 said Sunday that he and Khanna have submitted an amendment to strip Section 219 from the proposed NDAA. Massie\u2019s measure requires the assent of seven of the House Rules Committee\u2019s 13 members to get a vote.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-x\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Section 219 (was 224) of the NDAA contains a dangerous provision to integrate our military tech with Israel\u2019s.<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepRoKhanna?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepRoKhanna<\/a> &amp; I submitted an amendment to strike 219. I included the Rules Committee roster here; 7 of 13 members must agree in order for our amendment to get a vote. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9SeN7gdvtM\">pic.twitter.com\/9SeN7gdvtM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Thomas Massie (@RepThomasMassie) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepThomasMassie\/status\/2066346451123294706?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 15, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>In addition to Section 219, another provision of the proposed NDAA, Section 622, would \u201cexpand and enhance intelligence sharing\u201d with Israel, including \u201cinformation relating to cybersecurity threats, terrorism, sanctions evasion, plans and intentions of state and nonstate actors, adversarial technology proliferation, missile threats, unmanned aerial systems, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, air and space domain awareness, and other aerial threats relevant to the defense of Israel, United States forces and interests in the region, and regional security partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Section 622, which was introduced by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), also limits restrictions on intelligence sharing with Israel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis proposal is one of several recent moves by those in Washington who carry the Israeli government\u2019s water to keep the United States tied to Israel despite plummeting support for the country among the American public,\u201d Paul Pillar <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/us-intelligence-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> last week for Responsible Statecraft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most salient form of US support to Israel has been <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/articles\/us-aid-israel-four-charts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>more than $300 billion<\/u><\/a> in economic and especially military assistance. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has tried to get ahead of the declining public support and avoid embarrassing losses by <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/06\/03\/republicans-push-make-israel-pay-weapons-with-israels-blessing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>suggesting<\/u><\/a> it would be fine with him to phase out the military aid,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael\u2019s strategy and that of its US supporters is now to rely on ties with, and support from, the United States that are not as salient as the military aid with its prominent price tag,\u201d Pillar added. \u201cThe strategy includes forms of military integration that are <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/quincyinst.org\/research\/the-disappearing-aid-check-the-future-of-us-israel-defense-support\/#h-the-current-deal-and-why-it-is-running-out-of-road\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>less visible<\/u><\/a> than congressionally appropriated grant aid and therefore less publicly accountable. Section [219] of a defense authorization bill currently in the House of Representatives <u>embodies<\/u> this form of integration.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-x\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Why is the US considering mandating intelligence sharing with Israel at the exact moment Israel was caught spying on senior US officials so aggressively that one source described the operations as &quot;unhinged&quot;?<\/p>\n<p>Section 622 of the Senate Intelligence bill, \u201cUnited States-Israel\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Quincy Institute (@QuincyInst) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/QuincyInst\/status\/2066581402355945981?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 15, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Sections 219 and 622 come in the wake of the Pentagon\u2019s <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/national-security\/pentagon-raised-threat-israeli-spying-us-highest-level-sources-say-rcna348565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warning<\/a> of growing espionage threats posed to the United States by Israel, which has a <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/miftah.org\/Display.cfm?DocId=4643&amp;CategoryId=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long history<\/a> of spying on the US. Recent concerns center on Israel\u2019s alleged attempts to <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/welcome-news-despite-netanyahu-sabotage-efforts-us-and-iran-reach-interim-deal-to-end-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sabotage<\/a> efforts to end the Iran War.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the proposed Sections 219 and 622, Robert McCaw, director of government affairs at the Council on American-Islamic Relations, recently said in a <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cair.com\/action_alerts\/cair-action-alert-tell-congress-to-block-the-u-s-israel-military-merger-bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> that \u201cCongress must act to block these Israel\u2011first bills that would force a deeper US and Israel military and intelligence merger, a merger that will weaken independent American oversight, compromise US national interests, and pull the country into foreign conflicts without democratic consent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American people did not elect Congress to merge our military infrastructure, intelligence systems, defense technologies, artificial intelligence capabilities, cyber operations, and regional security architecture with a foreign government accused of genocide, apartheid, war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, collective punishment, torture, starvation policies, and the unlawful targeting of civilians,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of demanding accountability&#8230; Congress is seeking to reward the Israeli government with even deeper access to American military capabilities, technologies, intelligence resources, and strategic infrastructure,\u201d McCaw added. \u201cThe American people deserve a foreign policy that serves American interests and American values, not legislation that places the priorities of a foreign government above American sovereignty, accountability, and self-government.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US Sen.
