Quoted at the <a href=\"http:\/\/atwar.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/25\/the-war-logs\/?src=mv\"><em>New\u00c2\u00a0York Times<\/em> blog &#8220;At War,&#8221;<\/a> Justin Raimondo said, &#8220;What&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0particularly bad, from the perspective of the Obama administration officials\u00c2\u00a0charged with selling this war to the American people, is the dramatic portrayal\u00c2\u00a0of the sheer chaos enveloping our military effort. &#8230; Oh, and by the way, the\u00c2\u00a0Taliban is apparently armed with portable heat-seeking missiles &#8212; a fact the\u00c2\u00a0administration has been covering up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/justin\/2010\/07\/25\/bradley-mannings-gift\/\">Bradley Manning<\/a> &#8212;  the alleged leaker of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2010\/WORLD\/meast\/07\/06\/iraq.soldier.leak.charge\/index.html?eref=igoogle_cnn\">&#8220;Collateral Murder&#8221; video<\/a> &#8212;  remains in jail in Kuwait, the Pentagon has <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2010\/07\/26\/pentagon-launches-manhunt-for-document-leaker\/\">launched a manhunt<\/a> to identify others responsible for the most recent leak. Sen. Lindsey Graham <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2010\/07\/28\/sen-graham-prosecute-wikileaks-for-undermining-the-war-effort\/\">admonished WikiLeaks<\/a> for &#8220;undermining the war effort,&#8221; and the <a href=\"http:\/\/wire.antiwar.com\/2010\/07\/28\/fbi-chief-says-agents-assisting-dod-on-wikileaks\/\">FBI is working to assist the Defense Department<\/a> with its criminal investigation.<\/p>\n<p>WikiLeaks founder <a href=\"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/radio\/2010\/07\/28\/julian-assange-2\/\">Julian Assange<\/a> told Antiwar Radio&#8217;s Scott Horton on Wednesday that he has another <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2010\/07\/26\/assange-wikileaks-has-15000-more-documents-under-review\/\">15,000 documents<\/a> under review and still has plans to release the Garani video. Pentagon Papers leaker <a href=\"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/radio\/2010\/07\/28\/daniel-ellsberg-9\/\">Daniel Ellsberg<\/a> also made an appearance on the show to discuss how WikiLeaks has changed the face of both journalism and government transparency. Troops Headed to Somalia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The African Union has promised to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2010\/07\/27\/african-union-announces-escalation-4000-more-troops-headed-to-somalia\/\">commit another 4,000 troops<\/a> in the ongoing, U.S.-backed war in Somalia. The war gained attention after the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2010\/07\/11\/at-least-64-killed-in-uganda-world-cup-bombings\/\">bombings in Uganda<\/a> during the World Cup, leaving many to mistakenly conclude the attack was a result of Somalia having been ignored by the world.<\/p>\n<p>But nothing could be further from the truth, argued Jason Ditz in an op-ed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.projo.com\/opinion\/contributors\/content\/CT_somalia27_07-27-10_3KJ8NKB_v8.4142b10.html\"><em>Providence Journal<\/em><\/a> (R.I.)<em>. <\/em>&#8220;The world has been trying to install a series of illegitimate governments there for years. &#8230; And this attack did not happen in a vacuum but rather came after repeated threats from the Somali militant faction al-Shabaab to &#8216;retaliate&#8217; against Uganda for its many attacks on neighborhoods under al-Shabaab&#8217;s control.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, any attack on innocent civilians should be condemned, but it is worth recognizing that this did not stem from some religious dislike of soccer  &#8212;  as many would claim  &#8212;  but is instead a classic example of blowback from years of intervention.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Emergence of the Antiwar Republicans<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nine Republican members of the House sided with Democrats in July to start bringing troops home from Afghanistan. Though one can still count on two hands the congressional Republicans who publicly oppose the war, this latest development is not insignificant,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/vlahos\/2010\/07\/26\/new-antiwar-republicans\/\">said Kelley B. Vlahos<\/a>. &#8220;Coupled with recent statements by GOP chief Michael Steele, Ann Coulter, and WorldNetDaily&#8217;s Joseph Farah criticizing the Afghanistan war policy, it&#8217;s clear something is happening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In a recent interview with Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), who just broke ranks with the GOP to vote against war funding,&#8221; said Vlahos, &#8220;it becomes apparent that these emerging opponents are far from identifying with the antiwar protesters on the Left, nor are they non-interventionists in the mold of libertarian Rep. Ron Paul. For Chaffetz and others, withdrawing from Afghanistan has more to do with the way Obama is running the war, the unsustainable budgets, and nation-building rather than an existential critique on global meddling and the greater war on terror.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But as noted in blogs at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/sltrib\/blogs\/crawler\/50000811-70\/afghanistan-chaffetz-antiwar-iran.html.csp\"><em>Salt Lake City Tribune<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityweekly.net\/utah\/blog-3974-chaffetz-flip-flop-flips-against-afghanistan-war.html\"><em>Salt Lake City Weekly<\/em><\/a>, Chaffetz told Vlahos: &#8220;I&#8217;m about as hawkish as they come. I don&#8217;t believe 100,000 troops on the ground is going to make the situation better. The hesitancy from a lot of Republicans is they don&#8217;t want to be seen as cut and run, or soft on the defense issue. But I think it&#8217;s a very solid conservative viewpoint.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The peaceniks, the conservative noninterventionists, and a new wave of Republicans may all be war-weary, said Vlahos, but will they be able to find common cause?<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Pakistani Police State<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the proposed introduction of the Anti-Terrorism Bill of 2010, Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik is working to usher in a draconian surveillance society in the name of fighting &#8220;terrorism.&#8221; But how is the term being defined? &#8220;Broadly&#8221; would be an understatement. Establishing unapproved radio stations, damaging public property, and resisting the police would all be acts of terrorism, according to the bill.
