{"id":8052,"date":"2010-09-13T11:38:53","date_gmt":"2010-09-13T19:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=8052"},"modified":"2010-09-13T11:38:53","modified_gmt":"2010-09-13T19:38:53","slug":"monday-iran-talking-points-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/13\/monday-iran-talking-points-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Iran Talking Points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lobelog.com\/\">LobeLog<\/a>: News and Views Relevant to U.S.-Iran relations for September 13th, 2010:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703453804575479791919603272.html\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Gerecht_Reuel_Marc\">Reuel Marc Gerecht<\/a> and Mark Dubowitz, respectively a Senior Fellow and Executive Director at the neoconservative <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Foundation_for_Defense_of_Democracies\">Foundation for the Defense of Democracies<\/a>, point out that while sanctions have led to decreased trade between some American allies (European countries and Japan) and Iran,  China and Russia  will continue to fill \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the void\u00e2\u20ac\u009d unless America punishes their \u00e2\u20ac\u0153subversiveness.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The authors call on the U.S. to bar domestic business with subsidiaries of Russian and Chinese energy companies involved in Iran, force, block them from receiving U.S. contracts and state pension fund divestment from their businesses. They acknowledge  \u00e2\u20ac\u009dany U.S. action will surely infuriate Moscow and Beijing, as well as those in Washington who have worked to \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcreset\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 our relations with both countries.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d But they see the alternative as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153collapsing our Iran policy.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d They conclude by raising the specter of an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities should the U.S. fail its \u00e2\u20ac\u0153test of wills with Russia and China over Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, noting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu \u00e2\u20ac\u0153will decide one of these days whether a nuclear-armed Iran is acceptable, or not.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/world\/la-fg-iran-hikers-20100913,0,2928519.story\">Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/em>: The <em>L.A. Times<\/em> has a piece by Ramin Mostaghim and Borzou Daraghi, accompanied online by an <em>AP <\/em>video, on the possible release of Sarah Shroud. Shroud is one of the three American hikers arrested on espionage charges near the Iraq-Iran border more than a year ago. Her release that was scheduled for last Saturday, initially portrayed by Iran as an act of clemency to mark the end of Ramadan, has been delayed. Bail is now set at $500,000, according to both a lawyer for the hikers and the prosecutor. The U.S. government and their families have denied that the hikers are spies. Daraghi and Mostaghim note the prosecutor \u00e2\u20ac\u0153told reporters that Iran had enough evidence to prove the three were spies and the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcAmericans have responded too,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 hinting at possible behind-the-scenes diplomatic communications between Iran and the U.S. over the hikers.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSTRE68C23720100913\">Reuters<\/a><\/em>: IAEA Director-General Yukiya Amano said on Monday that, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s repeated objection to the designation of inspectors with experience in Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nuclear fuel cycle and facilities hampers the inspection process.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d  Iran insists the two inspectors were banned from entering the country in June because they have provided false information about the Iranian nuclear program. The IAEA and the US argue that Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s actions are an attempt to limit the monitoring capabilities of the UN\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nuclear watchdog.   Tehran has cited its right to refuse access for specific inspectors under the non-proliferation accord with the IAEA.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSTRE68B0XV20100912\">Reuters<\/a><\/em>: William Maclean reports that according to Mikhail Marelov, chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the Federation Council of Russia, his country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s support of Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nuclear energy program is intended to encourage Iranian compliance with the IAEA. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153That is why, if we cooperate with Iran in the field of nuclear energy when we do Bushehr, this is how we try to keep these guys playing by the rules of the IAEA,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d  Maretov told the International Institute of International Studies think tank. Moscow is finding it difficult to balance trade with Iran and improved relations with the US. Iran continues to express anger over Russia\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s refusal to veto the sanctions while the US and European Union are calling on Russia to put more pressure on Iran to abandon its alleged nuclear weapons program.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/blogs-and-stories\/2010-09-10\/911-mystery-nsa-files-on-al-qaeda-attack-never-probed\/\">The Daily Beast<\/a><\/em>: Philip Shenon reports that the 9\/11 Commission overlooked \u00e2\u20ac\u0153explosive material\u00e2\u20ac\u009d suggesting connections between the 9\/11 attacks and the Iranian government. The 9\/11 Commission, says Shenon, concentrated its research on CIA and FBI terrorism files and mostly ignored the NSA archives. Not until the end of the investigation did the Commission search NSA. Its belatedly acquired findings on Iran resulted in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the Iran material was forced into the commission\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s final report with limited context and without any chance for followup by the commission; the panel was about to shut down.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d  An anonymous \u00e2\u20ac\u0153former commission staff member\u00e2\u20ac\u009d told Shenon, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u009dIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s kind of shocking to me that no one has tried to get back in there since.
