National Review<\/em> Online<\/a>: Foundation for Defense of Democracies<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 president Cliff May<\/a> writes that Iran and Al Qaeda are \u00e2\u20ac\u0153two sides of the jihadi coin,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d adding that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153[s]ometimes they cooperate.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d He pronounces the Islamic Republic of Iran \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the first modern jihadi state\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and calls for \u00e2\u20ac\u0153agressive enforcement of sanctions\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201d something he maintains the Obama administration has failed to do. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rulers should be under the guns \u00e2\u20ac\u201d metaphorically for the present,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he asserts. Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leaders have the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153goals and a strategy to achieve\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Al Qaeda\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153mission,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he concludes.<\/p>\n

Foreign Policy<\/a><\/em>: On the Middle East Channel blog, Century Foundation Iran program<\/a> director Geneive Abdo<\/a> encourages the U.S. to take up Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s offer to renew discussions on the Tehran Declaration\u00e2\u20ac\u201ca fuel swap deal brokered between Turkey, Brazil and Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u201c as a confidence building measure toward resolving the West\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nuclear crisis with Iran. She reports that a Turkish delegation has twice been in Washington, including last week, to jump start the talks. Since it was introduced last May, Washington has spurned idea. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Rather than pursue talks over Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s broader nuclear program and risk failure,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she writes, noting little Iranian interest in the broader track, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a wiser move would be to talk with Iran first over the Tehran Declaration as a way of building trust.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

National Review Online<\/a><\/em>: Victor Davis Hanson<\/a> writes that two years into the Obama administration, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s becoming clear that Obama\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s worldview, based partly on appeasement<\/a>, has resolved few of the problems facing the U.S. in the international arena. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153[F]ailing to support the Iranian freedom protestors, ignoring the abuses of the Cuban and Syrian totalitarian regimes, and keeping silent about the destruction of democracy in Venezuela \u00e2\u20ac\u201d has resulted in even more animus, just as appeasement of the unhinged and dictatorial always does,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d contends Hanson. While listing the numerous ways that rising powers are becoming more confident in challenging the U.S., Hanson concludes Russia \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 weighs the downside of having a nuclear Islamic Iran in its neighborhood against the upside of having such a rogue state, which, at least in the short term, is more a problem for America than for Russia.
