{"id":842,"date":"2004-04-29T15:27:27","date_gmt":"2004-04-29T22:27:27","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2004-04-29T15:27:27","modified_gmt":"2004-04-29T22:27:27","slug":"better-than-saddam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2004\/04\/29\/better-than-saddam\/","title":{"rendered":"Better than Saddam"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/newsitems\/s1098037.htm\" target=\"_blank\">The general in charge of the US-run prison system in Iraq<\/a> has been suspended and put under investigation over the alleged abuse of Iraqi detainees by US soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>A senior US military spokesman says Brigadier General Janis Karpinski was suspended from her duties in late January after six US soldiers were indicted for mistreating prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ancapistan.typepad.com\/unfairwitness\/images\/430_hoodedman0.html\" onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/ancapistan.typepad.com\/unfairwitness\/images\/430_hoodedman0.html','popup','width=430,height=395,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"430_hoodedman0\" src=\"http:\/\/ancapistan.typepad.com\/unfairwitness\/images\/430_hoodedman0-thumb.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"229\" border=\"0\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gen Karpinski and another six officers are under administrative investigation that could result in letters of reprimand.<\/p>\n<p>The US Army confirmed the suspension after American network CBS broadcast images of US troops mistreating Iraqi prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs aired by the network on 60 Minutes II include one showing a prisoner standing on a box with a hood over his head and wires coming from his hands.<\/p>\n<p>The network says he was told he would be electrocuted if he fell off. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>View a video.
