{"id":8539,"date":"2010-11-15T03:06:19","date_gmt":"2010-11-15T11:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=8539"},"modified":"2010-11-16T14:25:09","modified_gmt":"2010-11-16T22:25:09","slug":"monday-iran-talking-points-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/15\/monday-iran-talking-points-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Iran Talking Points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lobelog.com\/\">LobeLog<\/a>: News and Views Relevant to U.S.-Iran relations for November 15th, 2010:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/congress-blog\/foreign-policy\/128937-arming-the-kingdom\">The Hill<\/a><\/em>: Rebecca Heinrichs, an adjunct fellow at the hawkish <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Foundation_for_Defense_of_Democracies\">Foundation for Defense of Democracies<\/a> (FDD), blogs that the $60 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia should not be allowed to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153sail through without serious oversight from Congress.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Heinrichs argues that although arming Saudi Arabia is widely seen as part of a containment and deterrence strategy against Iran, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is governed by a monarchy in accordance with Sharia Law\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6like the majority of Muslim countries, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia does not recognize the statehood of Israel.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d She admits the United States does enjoy access to Saudi oil exports and that the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leaders oppose Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s alleged nuclear weapons program but, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6but if a country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mores are more like those of our enemies than our allies, we should be careful how we reciprocate those benefits.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2010\/11\/how-egypt-is-helping-iran-to-circumvent-sanctions\/66557\/\">The Atlantic<\/a><\/em>: Jonathan Schanzer, vice president of research at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Foundation_for_Defense_of_Democracies\">Foundation for Defense of Democracies<\/a> (FDD), blogs that Egypt, through Misr Iran Development Bank (MIDB), an Egyptian-Iranian financial institution, has become a vehicle for Iran to circumvent international sanctions. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It is a testament to how difficult it can be for the U.S. to enforce international sanctions, even among countries that appear to be natural allies in the effort to deter Iran,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d writes Schanzer. He allows that, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Egypt, one of America\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s closest allies in the Middle East and the recipient of more U.S. foreign aid than any country in the world save Israel, is certainly not planning on becoming a rogue state allied with Iran,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d but \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6Egypt is clearly hedging between Iran and the U.S.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tagesspiegel.de\/meinung\/endspiel-mit-teheran\/2488444.html\">Der Tagespiegel<\/a><\/em>: The American Jewish Committee\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s David Harris has an op-ed in the German daily (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.org\/site\/apps\/nlnet\/content3.aspx?c=ijITI2PHKoG&#038;b=6178309&#038;ct=8876845&#038;notoc=1\">translated on AJC\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s website<\/a>) on the possibly forthcoming talks between the West and Iran. Harris cites experts who think Iran can be contained, then demurs: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153[Iran] is driven by a theology which believes in hastening the coming of the so-called Hidden Imam. If unleashing war would help, it cannot be ruled out.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Even an Iran that doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t use weapons could make the world \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a more dangerous place\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by sparking an arms race that could lead to proliferation all the way in Greece. Harris then addresses potential dangers to Israel because of Iranian threats and client groups on Israel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s borders. Harris concludes by calling for explicit military threats against Iran: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The best way to avoid [the military option] is by making clear that it is on the table in all dealings with Iran.
