{"id":8605,"date":"2010-11-26T12:54:01","date_gmt":"2010-11-26T20:54:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=8605"},"modified":"2010-11-26T12:54:01","modified_gmt":"2010-11-26T20:54:01","slug":"friday-iran-talking-points-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/26\/friday-iran-talking-points-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday Iran Talking Points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lobelog.com\/\">LobeLog<\/a>: News and Views Relevant to U.S.-Iran relations for November 26th, 2010:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpost.com\/Opinion\/Columnists\/Article.aspx?id=196649\">Jerusalem Post<\/a><\/em>: The right-wing English language Israeli daily has a piece by columnist Michael Freund, who revives the push that U.S. President Barack Obama can save his presidency by attacking Iran. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153There is one dramatic step that Obama can take that would have a transformative effect, not only on his standing in public opinion but on the world itself: Take aggressive action to stop Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nuclear program,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he writes, thus resurrecting <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/11\/01\/broders-iran-warvotes-column-originated-with-daniel-pipes-via-palin-and-abrams\/\">a meme started<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Pipes_Daniel\">Daniel Pipes<\/a> and adopted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Abrams_Elliott\">Elliott Abrams<\/a>, among others. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The thought of the would-be Hitler of Persia getting his hands on a nuclear weapon is one that should send shivers down the spine of every Israeli and every Westerner,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d writes Freund. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Imposing punishing sanctions and using military force if necessary to stop the Iranian nuclear program would rally the American public behind his administration and underscore the fact that US deterrence is alive and well.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/shadow.foreignpolicy.com\/posts\/2010\/11\/18\/irans_double_edged_sword\">Foreign Policy<\/a><\/em>: On FP\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Shadow Government blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Washington%20Institute%20for%20Near%20East%20Policy\">Washington Institute for Near East Policy<\/a> visiting fellow Michael Singh compares Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s diplomatic outreach to Africa with its alleged \u00e2\u20ac\u0153shadowy network of arms smuggling, support for terrorism, and subversive activities.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Singh, a former George W. Bush National Security Council official, produces a long list of transgressions, some of them mere allegations. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153These activities, taken together with Tehran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s refusal to cooperate with the IAEA on its nuclear activities and callous violations of its own people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s human rights, paint a picture of a regime which pursues its own security by flouting international rules and norms of acceptable behavior,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he writes. He calls for sanctions to be \u00e2\u20ac\u0153vigorously enforced\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and says Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s activities should be a lesson that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153even a resolution of the nuclear issue would only begin to address the far broader concerns about the regime and its activities.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703678404575636440366896042.html\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em>: In his Capital Journal column, Gerald Seib writes, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The goal of the U.S. and its allies right now is to make sure Iran has to make hard choices.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d With Iran denying they are seeking nuclear weapons while pointing to Israel\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s arsenal, \u00e2\u20ac\u009d Seib notes this gives a sense of the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153gulf\u00e2\u20ac\u009d between Iran and the United States. He says \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the best the U.S. and its allies can hope for right now is to slow down the Iranian program on the one hand, while increasing the cost of continuing it on the other.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Carnegie Endowment Iran expert <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnegieendowment.org\/experts\/index.cfm?fa=expert_view&#038;expert_id=340\">Karim Sadjadpour<\/a> told Seib: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Negotiations likely won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t resolve our dispute with Iran.
