{"id":8635,"date":"2010-11-30T14:04:41","date_gmt":"2010-11-30T22:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=8635"},"modified":"2010-11-30T14:04:41","modified_gmt":"2010-11-30T22:04:41","slug":"tuesday-iran-talking-points-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/30\/tuesday-iran-talking-points-16\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday Iran Talking Points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lobelog.com\/\">LobeLog<\/a>: News and Views Relevant to U.S.-Iran relations for November 30th, 2010:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704584804575644510268871730.html\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em>: In his weekly column, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Stephens_Bret\">Bret Stephens<\/a> asks \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Are Israeli Likudniks and their neocon friends (present company included) the dark matter pushing the U.S. toward war with Iran?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d After analyzing the WikiLeaks documents, he concludes that, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Arab Likudniks turn out to be even more vocal on that score.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Stephens goes on to argue that the need for missile defense has not been overblown because, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153we learned that North Korea had shipped missiles to Tehran that can carry nuclear warheads as far as Western Europe and Moscow.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2010\/11\/by-whatever-means-necessary-arab-leaders-want-iran-stopped\/67148\/\">The Atlantic<\/a><\/em>: Former <em>New York Times<\/em> investigative reporter Raymond Bonner blogs that the WikiLeaks documents have shown \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6that Israel is, as Jeffrey Goldberg <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/national\/archive\/2010\/11\/the-saudis-are-neocons-and-other-first-wikileaks-impressions\/67094\">notes<\/a>, [is] not alone in wanting decisive action to stop Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nuclear program.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Bonner repeats the alleged comments from King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and King Hamid of Bahrain, both of whom reportedly urged a U.S. military strike on Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nuclear program, and observes that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153this the same chilling language, which the American public is accustomed to hearing from hardline Israeli officials.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d He finishes his post by speculating that the death of an Iranian nuclear scientist on Monday might be the work of Saudi Arabia, UAE or Kuwait because it is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153easier for one of those countries to have infiltrated, or recruited, and less likely to be caught, because they could be confident Iran would blame Israel or the United States.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frumforum.com\/obamas-wikileaks-wake-up-call\">FrumForum<\/a><\/em>: Executive director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/emergency_committee_for_israel\">Emergency Committee for Israel<\/a> (ECI), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/pollak_noah\">Noah Pollak<\/a>, writes that this WikiLeaks release is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153obliterating the Gulf-side Middle East\u00e2\u20ac\u009d worldview of leftists and realists that had promoted negotiations with Iran and Syria, a withdrawal from Iraq and a policy of pressuring Israel to stop settlement construction. Pollak, attacking the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153linkage\u00e2\u20ac\u009d argument, blogs that Washington\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Arab allies are not alienated by the close U.S.-Israel relationship. Instead, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153we now know that what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really alienating the Arabs is America\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s reluctance to use its power to confront Iran and enforce a security architecture in which Israel is America\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s most capable client.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/254040\/according-wikileaks-israel-was-right-benjamin-weinthal\">National Review Online<\/a><\/em>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Foundation_for_Defense_of_Democracies\">The Foundation for Defense of Democracies<\/a>&#8216; Benjamin Weinthal observes that WikiLeaks has  \u00e2\u20ac\u0153forced [Arab world leaders] to come out of the diplomatic closet and declare Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s regime the number one enemy in the Middle East.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Now that the Arab world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s opposition to Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s nuclear program is known, says Weinthal, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time to ratchet up sanctions against the Islamic Republic\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s energy and financial sectors.
