{"id":8888,"date":"2010-12-28T16:34:15","date_gmt":"2010-12-29T00:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=8888"},"modified":"2010-12-28T16:34:15","modified_gmt":"2010-12-29T00:34:15","slug":"tuesday-iran-talking-points-20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/28\/tuesday-iran-talking-points-20\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday Iran Talking Points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lobelog.com\/\">LobeLog<\/a>: News and Views Relevant to U.S.-Iran relations for December 28th, 2010:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/articles\/logic-our-iran-sanctions_524860.html?nopager=1\">The Weekly Standard<\/a><\/em>: The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Foundation_for_Defense_of_Democracies\">Foundation for Defense of Democracies<\/a>&#8216; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Gerecht_Reuel_Marc\">Reuel Marc Gerecht<\/a> and Mark Dubowitz write that the Obama administration\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sanctions against Iran have \u00e2\u20ac\u0153assiduously avoided punishing any major European, Russian, or Chinese transgressor of U.S.-mandated sanctions,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and that they must now \u00e2\u20ac\u0153ratchet up significantly the pain in Tehran while encouraging our allies to continue to do more than they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d originally thought possible.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d They advocate that the administration expose the role played by the Iranian Republican Guard Corps in the crude oil exporting supply chain and then sanction foreign companies which participate in this trade. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Current sanctions and the regime\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s atrocious economic management have brought hard times. For the United States and its allies to be successful, the times need to be made a good deal harder still,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d they conclude.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/right-turn\/2010\/12\/the_unchecked_iranian_menace.html\">The Washington Post<\/a><\/em>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/rubin_jennifer\">Jennifer Rubin<\/a>, writing on her Right Turn blog, picks up on the <em>Weekly Standard<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/blogs\/us-arrests-iranian-member-qods-force-working-taliban_524899.html\">report <\/a>on NATO forces capturing a member of Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Qods Force who was serving as a Taliban commander. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Iranian citizens may be pinched by sanctions, but the regime continues to support terrorism, attack U.S. troops and pursue its nuclear program,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d writes Rubin.  Her post, published on December 27th, noticeably overlooks a retraction of the claim, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isaf.nato.int\/article\/isaf-releases\/correction-isaf-clarifies-status-of-cross-border-weapons-facilitator.html\">issued by NATO<\/a>, on December 24th, which read, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The International Security Assistance Force has determined a cross-border weapons facilitator detained Dec. 18 is <strong>not <\/strong>a member of the Iranian Qods force, as was originally reported.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (emphasis added)<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/op-eds\/2010\/12\/little-cheer-first-two-years-obamas-middle-east-policy\">The Washington Examiner<\/a><\/em>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/American_Enterprise_Institute\">American Enterprise Institute<\/a> Fellow and former UN Ambassador <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Bolton_John\">John Bolton<\/a> opines that Obama\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Iran policy has hinged on a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153naive belief\u00e2\u20ac\u009d that Iran will engage in negotiations about its nuclear program and has, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6continued to make progress toward obtaining deliverable nuclear weapons, and suffered only minimal economic sanctions as a result.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Bolton suggests that the administration is pursuing a path of containing a nuclear Iran but, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153This is almost certainly wrong, since Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leaders do not see human life the same way that Moscow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s atheists did.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d He concludes, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Weakness inspires our adversaries, and dispirits our friends, invariably to our collective disadvantage.
