{"id":9092,"date":"2011-02-01T02:46:55","date_gmt":"2011-02-01T10:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=9092"},"modified":"2011-02-02T10:44:30","modified_gmt":"2011-02-02T18:44:30","slug":"tuesday-iran-talking-points-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/02\/01\/tuesday-iran-talking-points-24\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday Iran Talking Points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lobelog.com\/\">LobeLog<\/a>: News and Views Relevant to U.S.-Iran relations for February 1st, 2011:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703439504576116152251152190.html?mod=googlenews_wsj\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em>: Council on Foreign Relations senior fellow <a href=\"http:\/\/rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Boot_Max\">Max Boot<\/a> writes, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153[I]t does scant justice to the complexity of the situation to claim that Mr. Mubarak was a superb ally, or to imagine that we can manage an easy transition to a post-Mubarak regime.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Boot uses a series of quotes catalogued by the controversial <a href=\"http:\/\/rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Middle_East_Media_Research_Institute\">Middle East Media Research Institute<\/a> showing \u00e2\u20ac\u0153rabid anti-Semitism and anti-Westernism that polluted Egypt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s state-controlled news media.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Boot doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t find Mohammed ElBaredei to be an attractive alternative to Mubarak because \u00e2\u20ac\u0153[h]e called the Gaza Strip \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcthe world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s largest prison\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and declared that it was imperative to \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcopen the borders, end the blockade.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Boot adds, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Mr. ElBaradei also spoke glowingly of Turkey\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has assailed Israel in harsh terms and voted against United Nations sanctions on Iran.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703833204576114510470768534.html?mod=googlenews_wsj\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em>: Ronen Bergman, an intelligence analyst for Yedioth Ahronoth, an Israeli daily, draws lessons from the fall of the Shah in Iran that apply to the current situation in Egypt, and recommends that the U.S. stand by Mubarak or risk repeating the mistakes that led to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the establishment of an Islamic regime in Tehran that has been no friend to the U.S.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Bergman concludes, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Past experience  suggests that if Mr. Mubarak\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s regime is toppled, not only will American interests suffer, but the cause of freedom in Egypt could be set back dramatically. And the U.S. will have contributed to a Middle East that is less stable and more dangerous than it is today.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aolnews.com\/2011\/02\/01\/opinion-how-to-avoid-an-iran-like-tragedy-in-egypt\/\">AOL News<\/a><\/em>: The <a href=\"http:\/\/rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/American_Enterprise_Institute\">American Enterprise Institute<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"http:\/\/rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Rubin_Michael\">Michael Rubin<\/a> opines that the Obama administration must be careful to avoid an \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Iran-like tragedy in Egypt\u00e2\u20ac\u009d but Mubarak might not be the lynchpin to maintaining U.S. interests in Egypt. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The true value of Egypt was its peace treaty with Israel, an event that predated Mubarak\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rise,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d writes Rubin.  \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Many analysts see the shadow of Iran\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Islamic revolution in the Egyptian chaos. One parallel is certain: Should Mubarak flee, it will be the end of the beginning rather than the beginning of the end,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he warns.
