{"id":999,"date":"2004-06-01T15:01:51","date_gmt":"2004-06-01T22:01:51","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2004-06-01T15:01:51","modified_gmt":"2004-06-01T22:01:51","slug":"meet-the-new-puppets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2004\/06\/01\/meet-the-new-puppets\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the New Puppets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><\/p>\n<h3>Same as the Old Puppets&#8230;&#8230;.<\/h3>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Any hopes that new faces would appear as the &#8220;interim government&#8221; died yesterday as <a href=\"http:\/\/riverbendblog.blogspot.com\/2003_08_01_riverbendblog_archive.html#106191923732134179\" target=\"_blank\">the Puppet Council <\/a>basically reshuffled itself and was reincarnated as the &#8220;interim government.&#8221;  Apparently, the first order of business for the New Iraqi Prime Minister\u00ae involves <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adn.com\/24hour\/world\/story\/1406330p-8697983c.html\" target=\"_blank\">assuring the people of Iraq that he&#8217;s still an American tool<\/a> who intends to grant the American military&#8217;s fondest wish, <a href=\"http:\/\/ancapistan.typepad.com\/unfairwitness\/2004\/02\/sofas_for_the_a.html\" target=\"_blank\">a SOFA agreement <\/a>and basing rights in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>The only comment so far <a href=\"http:\/\/www.record-journal.com\/articles\/2004\/06\/01\/ap\/Headlines\/d82u79m80.txt\" target=\"_blank\">from Iraqis outside the &#8220;Green Zone&#8221; hothouse:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Al-Yawer, a Sunni Muslim who has sharply criticised U.S. policy in Iraq, will hold the largely symbolic post of president, while the more powerful position of prime minister goes to Allawi, a U.S.-backed Shiite Muslim with military and CIA connections.<\/p>\n<p>Allawi, whose appointment was announced Friday, was chosen because he was considered the best candidate to cope with the deteriorating security situation.<\/p>\n<p>As word of the appointment was announced, a car bomb blew up outside the offices of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, which is located just outside the green zone U.S. coalition headquarters in central Baghdad.<\/p>\n<p>The Arab language television stations Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya quoted police as saying about 10 people were killed, but the information could not immediately be confirmed. Another blast, followed by gunfire, sent a mushroom cloud billowing into the air.
