Cover Up:
Attack On The USS Liberty

On June 8, 1967, the intelligence ship U.S.S. Liberty, stationed off the Sinai Peninsula during the Six-Day War, was attacked by unmarked jets and later by unmarked torpedo boats. In all, 34 men were killed and 171 wounded.

Deep into the attack, the captain and crew realized that the aggressor was their ally, Israel, who claimed they couldn't identify the ship as American. The incident remains controversial:

  • Why was the Liberty so close to a hot war zone?
  • Why did Israel attack?
  • Why was the Liberty's crew told not to speak about the attack?
  • Why did Israeli jets buzz the ship eight hours prior to the attack?
  • Why was a Navy fighter squadron sent to the ship's aid called back twice?
  • And why is the attack on the Liberty the only major US maritime catastrophe never investigated by the United States Congress?

The History Channel, as part of their "History Undercover" series, examines crewmembers' contentions that the attack was intentional and that both governments covered up the true details.
