‘To Hear and Feel the Horror’

Just back from New Orleans last night. After many trips from about 2001-2009, this was our first visit to a beloved city in quite awhile. I had posted last week about the trip but only in relation to the annual French Quarter Festival, as “forced secrecy” surrounded the true reason: Winning the top, and only, film award from the Organization of American Historians (OAH) – largest group of its kind – for the year’s best documentary or TV program, Atomic Cover-up (which I wrote and directed). It was presented Friday night at their annual conference, typically attended by 1500 or more folks.

Previous winners, going back decades, included many Oscar/Emmy winners and nominees, several by Ken Burns, and so forth. Of course, this is especially gratifying since I have, broadly speaking, been working on it since June 1982. But that’s another story. You might call it The Parts Left Out of Oppenheimer.

Iran’s Response to Israel’s Unprecedented Attack

Reprinted from Bracing Views with the author’s permission.

Iran has responded with drones and missiles to Israel’s previous attack on its consular building in Syria, which killed senior officers in the Iranian military. The Iranian response seems to have done little damage to Israel, telegraphed as it was in advance by Iran. In theory, Iran has now saved face and we can move on with our lives with less fear of World War III breaking out in the Middle East.

Not so fast, apparently, as Netanyahu’s government claims it must now respond to the Iranian response. Apparently, leveling Gaza and seizing more territory in the West Bank isn’t enough to keep the right-wing government in Israel busy. The Biden administration continues to say it will have Israel’s back, so the risk of further escalation remains high.

Biden Walks Into Netanyahu’s Trap

The Washington Post reports that Israel didn’t give the U.S. advance warning about the strike on the Iranian consulate last week that killed seven people, including a high-ranking IRGC general:

Senior Pentagon officials were frustrated that Israel did not notify the United States before conducting a strike on an Iranian site in Syria this month, an escalation that they assess increases risks to American forces in the Middle East, U.S. officials said.

‘Do the Right Thing,’ Say Assange Defenders as Biden Mulls Dropping Case

U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday said his administration is weighing the Australian government’s requests to drop charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has been deprived of his freedom since 2010 and is currently jailed in London’s notorious Belmarsh Prison while fighting extradition to the United States.

Asked by reporters at the White House about requests from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and members of the country’s Parliament for the U.S. and United Kingdom to drop the extradition effort and charges against Assange – an Australian citizen – Biden said that “we’re considering it.”

Stella Assange, Julian’s wife, responded to Biden’s remarks on social media. “Do the right thing,” she wrote. “Drop the charges. #FreeAssangeNOW.”
