From the Washington Post‘s account of an attack on an Iraqi army base today:

The Americans provided covering fire while Iraqi soldiers pursued the attackers who had entered the compound, said Lt. Col Eric Bloom, a U.S. military spokesman. The U.S. intervention also included helicopters and drones, he said.

50,000 US troops remain in Iraq. Re-labeling them (“advisers”) doesn’t take them out of harm’s way. No magic, bulletproof “we’re not combat troops any more” force field pops into existence around them just because POTUS made a speech. They’re still there, and the fighting continues.

The American combat mission in Iraq has ended? I need not deplete my own meager rhetorical arsenal for a pithy response — Confederate cavalry warlord (and, to his eternal discredit, Ku Klux Klan founder) Nathan Bedford Forrest provided that response 140-odd years ago:

Damn such nonsense. War means fightin’ and fightin’ means killin’. Turn the grindstone.

    Using South Korea as an comparison, combat ended there in 1953. Does that mean America will keep 50,000 troops in Iraq until 2067..and counting?

    I am thankful that this country is nearing the end of its empire. The level of lying bullshit that permeates everything is making my head hurt. A person needs some sanity and truth in their environment to maintain their equilibrium, Right now our horizon is tumbling because everything is propaganda – propaganda to make me believe that killing Muslims is necessary, that greed is creative, and that militarism is the essence of Christianity. I feel like a hamster locked inside a hollow ball being kicked around. Blessed will be the economic collapse or military defeat that purges the bullshit from our country.

    Yes, Virginia, there actually are "grownup" Americans who wholeheartedly believe that statement. Many of them have advanced college degrees, earn six-figure incomes, handle sharp objects and operate vehicles and other heavy machinery without supervision, and live in your neighborhood (probably even right next door to you).
