GOP Rep. Andy Biggs Urges President Trump To Bring Troops Home From Iraq and Afghanistan

The Mission Could Be Accomplished by the End of This Year

Washington, DC

Dear Mr. President:

Under your leadership, our nation has achieved unprecedented prosperity. Now, as we observe Veterans Day, I hope you will look abroad and continue to strategically draw down our nation’s military presence in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have both been enormously costly in lives and dollars, In the case of Afghanistan, instead of merely conducting counterterrorism operations in the wake the September 11, 2001, attacks, our troops engaged in full-scale nation-building efforts both before and after the 2011 killing of Osama bin Laden in neighboring Pakistan, a supposed ally of the United States. Having now lasted over 19 years, the war in Afghanistan has been the longest overseas conflict in American history. But, sadly, the situation on the ground today looks much the same now as it did back in 2001, with the Taliban in control of much of the country.

And then there is Iraq. Over the last 18 years, our forces toppled Saddam Hussein’s government and successfully fought terrorists of many different stripes in Iraq, including the Islamic State.

But these achievements have simply not been worth the cost. Instead of focusing on limited aims, we fell into the same nation-building, ” peacekeeping” trap in Iraq that ensnared us in Afghanistan, even after major combat operations officially ended in 2011. Today, Iraq’s government is shaky at best, addicted to continuing foreign assistance , and easily susceptible to pressure from outside actors, especially Iran.

Nation-building doesn’t work, as you immediately recognized upon taking office: Afghanistan and Iraq today are clearly not beacons of democracy, stability, or prosperity, despite the thousands of American lives and trillions of dollars we have sacrificed to try to remake these countries. None of this is a criticism of our brave men in women in uniform, who have performed heroically in these and all other overseas engagements. Instead, it is an indictment of Washington’ s broken foreign policy establishment, which is dominated by arm-chair idealists who never seem to grasp the messy realities on the ground.

I commend your efforts so far to bring our engagements in Afghanistan and Iraq to an end, including your bold decision to open negotiations with the Taliban and your ambitious plan to remove thousands of United States servicemembers from these two countries. I urge you to continue to aggressively pursue these and all other related efforts in the coming weeks. What greater gift could we give the American people as we head into the holiday season?

Sincerely,

Andy Biggs
Member of Congress, Arizona 5th District

    1. And Libya, S. Korea, Germany, France, Poland, the UK, Israel, Japan….well, you know where to find a world map….

    2. Hey, are you still able to post? I got kicked off for some reason. Didn’t say anything other than what I typically say. Not even sure how I was able to post this. All new articles come up as banned. My comments are not PC, but nothing new.

      1. I have had the same problem as you, sometimes my comments here or somewhere else get deleted even if I don’t say anything to offend anyone.

  1. Comrade Trump had two years of undivided government, and another two years with one chamber controlled by the Democratic Party. He could have withdrawn everything, could he have not?

Instead ,he brought this country to the brink of war with Iran, twice. There is a likely cover up of injuries sustained by the US troops in the retaliatory attack by the Iran after the second attempt to start a war with Iran. I can’t hear rep Biggs calling for an inquiry on that?

Rep Biggs is a partisan hack who is already positioning himself to criticize Biden. This is all. He and the party that he represents had their chance to show how serious they are about ending the forever wars. Not very. Attempts to start another war do not count, Comrade Biggs.

  2. He should and I absolutely agree 100%!

    Oct 29, 2020 Robert O’Brien – Trump’s Foreign Policy

Donald Trump is the first American president since Ronald Reagan not to initiate a foreign war. Moreover, peace is breaking out in the Middle East. National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien explains the Trump approach.

In 1932, during the Great Depression, tens of thousands of World War I veterans marched on Washington DC demanding early payments of their army bonuses which weren’t promised to arrive until 1945.

  4. I fear war and tyranny if Biden gets in. Trump is the first President that hasn’t started a new foreign conflict since Reagan. That’s why they’re trying to cheat him in this election. For those that don’t believe that Trump has dramatically lowered US fatalities, go to icasualties.org and compare to first 4 years of Obama. About a 13 to 1 ratio lower deaths under Trump. And of course Obama destruction of Libya was horrific. Biden already talking about going to war in Syria with Assad must go crowd.

    1. Trump may not have started any new wars which is good. The good things he has done were: not starting new wars, having peace talks with Kim Jong Un , saying we should leave Syria & Afghanistan, saying other nations should pay for US Bases on their turf. The bad things he has done were: ending the Iran Deal & re-imposing sanctions, curtailing trade & travel with Cuba, sending drones to kill Soleimani, supporting Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Territories which previous presidents of both parties condemned although they continued aid to Israel, transferring the embassy to Jerusalem, rigging Brazil’s election to make Bolsonaro president & saying Guaido is Venezuela’s legitimate leader, meddling in Bolivia’s affairs because he wants to decide its leader & having a travel ban from specific Muslim Majority Nations & supporting Saudi Arabia’s government which is waging war in Yemen and killed Jamal Khashoggi at its consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

  5. Mr. President, please listen to Cong. Biggs and others. Bring the troops home. Bring them home from Europe and Asia also. Our bases there are unnecessary and costly. While you are at it, stop our involvement with other NATO and foreign sponsored kinetic conflicts. Stop as much of the GWOT that does not actually involve American defense. And please stop the intelligence community’s abusive domestic operations and cover operations abroad such as in Bolivia or Belarus. And why are we drone bombing all over Africa and Yemen. When did people from there attack us? Oh, yes. Pardon all those who have been persecuted for supporting your Administration and pardon yourself also. That would really stick it to the cheaters. And I would like to see you run again. Trump 2024. Be heartened. By then Harris and Biden will have shown their true colors. Americans who voted for their Green paradise will have sticker shock. Remember, in the womb of all Utopias lies an embryo of tyranny. America is exceptional because it stands opposed to such vile birth. In my opinion, we will never march in lockstep to the Democratic Party platform. You will have a landslide victory as the Democratic administration diminishes, dries up and becomes bitter & salty from lock-downs, open borders, economic failures, taxes, war, Green regimen and Socialist rules. You can make America even greater after the dark years ahead under the Democratic order by restoring peace, freedom and prosperity. But you have to take some dramatic action in the next few weeks to conserve your legacy while you can.
