Wall Street Journal Votes for Netanyahu

It will be interesting to see what Rupert Murdoch does to the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal, particularly if long-standing rumors that he intends to distance itself at least a little from its thinly veiled Likudist line. This week’s op-ed by Shalem Center senior fellow Michael Oren entitled “Israel’s Lebanon Disaster” was particularly – extravagantly, embarrassingly – transparent in its implied championship of former Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who is predictably calling for the resignation of the Olmert government and new elections. An unsparing indictment of Olmert’s performance during the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war, the op-ed apparently anticipated a much more damning verdict in the long-awaited Winograd Commission report than what the Commission actually produced, one day after Oren’s screed. Oren, whose bizarre comparison last September (also published in the Journal) of George W. Bush to the Old Testament prophet Jonah as part of the neo-conservative campaign to rally support for the Surge I noted in a September post, even blames the fact that his rifle fell apart during Israel’s eleventh-hour ground offensive in Lebanon on Olmert.

An Israeli nationalist historian who was born and raised in the U.S., is a protege of Natan Sharansky, the director of the Shalem Center’s Adelson Institute, named for its founder-funder, casino multi-billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who reportedly is also the biggest financial backer of Freedom’s Watch, which launched its own campaign to save the Surge at the same time that the Journal published Oren’s Jonah article. It’s really all part of the same Netanyahu network: the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal, the Shalem Center, Freedom’s Watch, and you can add the Middle East specialists at the American Enterprise Institute, Sharansky’s One Jerusalem, etc. etc. Aside from the fact that Oren clearly failed to anticipate the Commission’s exculpatory findings, what’s remarkable about this most recent column is the Journal‘s willingness to be so openly partisan in Israel’s internal politics. Is Bret Stephens, who, before becoming the Journal‘s “Global View” columnist, served as editor of the Conrad Black-owned Jerusalem Post, responsible? Will Murdoch retain him when he assumes full control?

  1. Oren blamed his rifle malfunction on Olmert?! What a jackass! If I had been his commanding officer, I’d have placed the blame for that squarely on Oren’s shoulders and given him a stint in the brig for negligence in maintaining the equipment for which he was responsible. No, better yet, I’d have ordered him to be the point man in a patrol.

  2. One will note that Freedom’s Watch is financing anti-immigrant propaganda, mainly in regard to Mexico and Mexicans.

That is the item that gives away its true purpose, which is both political and electoral.

The goal is fairly obvious–to keep control of American foreign policy, whether Republicans or Democrats are in seeming control the executive branch.

    1. I’m finding this assertion rather hard to believe, actually. Neo-cons, thorough-going enthusiasts of free trade, have been some of the biggest supporters of unfettered immigration out there. Their position on the question is hardly distinguishable from that of the Wall Street Journal. I’m skeptical.

  3. A NEW HOPE
We all have been living a nightmare. A vision D. Eisenhower warned of in his 1961 farewell address to the nation. In his address, Eisenhower warned of the corruption of our government, our society, and our culture by the MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX. It seems that, as a nation, we have not listened. Eisenhower’s dire vision has become our reality. And from this fearful dream, this nation is waking. Our eyes are opening to the truth collectively for the first time. WE THE PEOPLE are finding that we have been subjugated, placated into ignorance and fear, lied to by the very people we have entrusted to preserve and protect our rights, liberties, and our constitution. Many will turn away in fear of truth and close their eyes once again. To open our eyes to this reality, is to also understand that we are all responsible for it as well. complacency and dependence upon the machine keeps THE PEOPLE in line because it is convenient and safe. We have sold our souls. We have as a nation let this happen to ourselves.
My heart breaks for the people of this nation. Our government wages war upon our freedoms, liberties, and our constitution. I watch our republic’s destruction, not to the sound of guns or bombs, but to the sound of thunderous applause of those held captive by terrified patriotic blindness, guided by the propaganda of fear, as we give our rights and even the lives of our fellow man for the profit of the corrupt. A fear that is erasing our great history of freedom and repeating itself 70 years later with another dictatorship of war, under the guise of homeland security and the protection of the people.
    BUT THERE IS STILL HOPE.
With love and openness, we can overcome ignorance and fear. It is our right as the people, and my duty as a United States MARINE written into our constitution by our founding fathers, entrusted to us, by the people, to ensure that our liberty, freedom, and the constitution never again become the subjugation of the corruption that we have wrought upon ourselves. We must take back our country, and give it to the people. So let us open our hearts, take responsibility, and make our HOPE become our reality. Lets begin REVOLUTION. His name

    Dr. Ron Paul

  4. Hi George,

Although I understand your position here, if Ron Paul is not elected, our country will continue to slide from its Constitution, worsening the effect it has on the rest of the world. The only solution is for us to go back to the roots of our Founding Fathers. Under Obama, that will not happen. He is also a tool of the ruling elite. Don’t be fooled by the skin color and the religion. It is all “window dressing”, analogous to a corpse wearing a brand new tuxedo. No matter how good he looks or sounds, he is still a dead guy.

Don’t fall for “the lesser of two evils” argument. This mindset has done great harm to our Republic over the years. Remember how they sold us George Bush? A great Christian who promised a humble foreign policy? Do I need to go any further here/

Our Media will continue to ignore Ron Paul but his popularity will continue to grow and he will enter a brokered convention for the GOP nomination. Can he win? Of course he can and I believe he will.

Please pray for our country as there are evil men here who are doing what the can to prevent this. I know they will fail.

    Phil
