From the Minnesota Peace Action Coalition:

Minneapolis Saturday protest to speak out against U.S. wars on atomic bombing anniversary

The weekend of August 5 will mark 78 years after the U.S. atomic bombings of Japan during World War 2.

Twin Cities anti-war and peace groups are planning a protest to mark the atomic anniversary with a call for an end to U.S. wars and military interventions around the world.

The protest will be held Saturday, August 5 at 1:00 pm at Vineland & Lyndale/Hennepin Ave (near the sculpture garden) in Minneapolis.

Participants will hold signs and banners with anti-war messages.

A statement issued by organizers says in part, “As the world marks 78 years since the atomic bombings of Japan in 1945, the danger of nuclear war and World War 3 is again a reality. Non-nuclear wars lead to nuclear war.”

The statement continues, “”Today the U.S./NATO proxy war against Russia in Ukraine raises the danger of nuclear war. The U.S. is in what amounts to a cold war with China that could explode into a new war. These wars and war threats and the unending U.S. military interventions around the world have nothing to do with protecting human rights. They are attempts by the U.S. government to control the distribution of resources around the world.”

The statement continues, “The endless series of U.S. wars and interventions could escalate and set off the spark that leads to nuclear war. We remember that the U.S. military detonated two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, killing between 129,000 and 226,000 people.”

The Saturday protest was initiated by the Minnesota Peace Action Coalition.

The call for the protest is endorsed by: Anti-War Committee, Black Alliance for Peace Midwest Solidarity Network, Climate Justice Committee, Freedom Road Socialist Organization, Mayday Books, Minnesota War Tax Resistance, Party for Socialism & Liberation – Minneapolis, Socialist Action, Socialist Party USA – Twin Cities Local, Tsuru for Solidarity Minnesota, Twin Cities Assange Defense, Veterans for Peace Chapter 27 – Minneapolis, Welfare Rights Committee, Women Against Military Madness and others.
