John Mearsheimer: ‘Why Are They Making Gaza Unlivable? It’s Very Simple, They Want To Drive the Palestinians Out’

On 15 May 2024, I was in Sydney, Australia, where I spoke at the Centre for Independent Studies about the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. I analyzed both the war in Gaza, which started on October 7 and continues to rage; and the fighting between Iran on one side and Israel and the US on the other side, that took place between 1 April and 19 April 2024.

I then assessed the consequences of these two conflicts for Israel, the US, and Iran.

Editor’s Note:   This is a very informative and insightful talk.   I learned a lot. ~EG

Mission Creep in the Russia-Ukraine War

The latest headline from the New York Times shows mission creep for NATO in the Russia-Ukraine War:

As Russia Advances, NATO Considers Sending Trainers Into Ukraine

By Helene Cooper, Julian E. Barnes, Eric Schmitt and Lara Jakes

The move could draw the United States and Europe more directly into the war. The Biden administration continues to say there will be no American troops on the ground.

Recall that when Russia invaded Ukraine in its “special military operation,” the initial response from the U.S. and NATO was to provide defensive weaponry like anti-tank missiles and shoulder-launched SAMs. How quickly that escalated! U.S. aid to Ukraine is now approaching $175 billion (both provided and promised by Congress) and included offensive weaponry, everything from long-range missiles to main battle tanks to combat aircraft. Even so, Ukrainian forces, attrited by Russia and its superior resources in manpower and especially in artillery shells, are losing this war. Hence the headline above about NATO sending “trainers” into Ukraine.

Time for a Change in Washington

The recent statement by the former Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Milley, “We slaughtered people in massive numbers, innocent people who had nothing to do with their government, men, women, and children,” is a rare admission by someone in his rank. At the same time, in March 2023,  still on active duty, Milley said that Ukrainians on the current battlefields are the sons and grandsons of the people who fought against Stalin and Zhukov. Not sure if he realizes that both these statements actually disparage or even betray American World War II veterans since Milley should have known that we were allies in the war with the Nazis.

Still, when it comes to the war in Ukraine which is at the center of the current crisis, one should admit that Milley’s rhetoric is less dangerous compared with the one emanating from Biden, Blinken, and Sullivan or some of their NATO and EU colleagues like Sunak, Macron, Scholz, Duda and Co. It seems there is no indication that they are prepared to listen to the sober voices calling to give a chance for diplomacy to end this conflict.

So Much for ‘Democracy’ – Blinken OKs Ukraine Cancelling Elections

On today’s Ron Paul Liberty Report:

In between playing guitar in a nightclub and eating pizza in a Nazi-themed restaurant in Kiev, Secretary of State Antony Blinken took the time to justify Ukraine’s cancellation of elections and the inevitable loss of democratic legitimacy of the Ukrainian government. This “war for democracy” thus is revealed as just a proxy war on Russia. Also today: The Gaza aid pier is about to go live, but may well lead to disaster. Finally, new documents show Biden’s complicity in the horrors in Gaza.

Biden Lets Israel Off the Hook Again

The Biden administration finally released their report on Israeli compliance with international humanitarian law on Friday. Predictably, the administration ignored the mountain of evidence showing Israeli violations of international law in their conduct of the war and their ongoing efforts to impede the delivery of humanitarian aid. Akbar Shahid Ahmed reported:

President Joe Biden’s administration on Friday concluded its assessment of whether Israel is breaking international and American laws in its U.S.-backed military campaign in Gaza and did not conclude that Israel’s conduct requires Washington to cut off aid for the offensive, according to a copy of the assessment reviewed by HuffPost.
