EU Foreign Policy Chief: Europe Is a Garden, Most of the World Is a Jungle: ‘The Gardeners Must Take Care of It’

After growing international criticism, Josep Borrell, the European Union’s outspoken foreign policy chief, has apologized (sort of) for making controversial remarks in which he described Europe as an idyllic “garden” of order where the rule of law prevails and the rest of the world as mostly a “jungle” of corruption where “might makes right.” But Borrell also stood by the remarks, emphasizing that he didn’t mean to come across as racist and arguing that he’s not the first to use the garden/jungle metaphor so everyone should cut him some slack.
